If you're trying to plan the best things to do at a sleepover, don't overlook sleepover games. Whether the slumber party is for kids, teens or even adults, age is but a number when it comes to making memories with friends.

You may be wondering, "What are the best sleepover games?" Whether you need sleepover games for kids, sleepover games for adults or scary sleepover games, we've put together a list of fun games — both classic and unique — for all occasions.

Sleepover Games For Kids

1. Charades

Charades is one of the oldest sleepover games in the book, and it's still just as fun today as it was decades ago. Acting out different characters with over-the-top performances never gets old. You can learn how to play Charades like a pro so you can win every time.

2. Talent Contest

If you're looking for sleepover games for kids that will keep them busy for hours, host a talent show. Not only will they have a blast, but it's also a great opportunity for them to let their creativity shine.

3. Indoor Mini Golf

Think outside the box with your sleepover games and set up an indoor mini golf course. You can use plastic cups for the "holes" and create obstacles with various household objects.

4. Hide and Seek

Few sleepover games are as classic as hide and seek. It's always fun to see how creative kids can be with their hiding spots.

5. DIY Obstacle Course

With everyday items like folding chairs and pillows, you can create a DIY obstacle course that's one of the most innovative sleepover games. Kids can crawl, run and jump to burn off some of their energy, competing to see who can finish first.

6. The Floor Is Lava

There's only one rule in this game: you can't touch the floor or you'll get burnt to a crisp. Set a timer to see who can stay off the ground the longest, jumping on chairs, couches and other furniture to avoid the "lava."

7. LEGO Contest

LEGOs are great sleepover games because they promote creativity while also building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. According to Johns Hopkins University, LEGOs develop spatial reasoning skills that make children smarter. Either divide the kids into teams or let everyone go it alone, giving an equal amount of LEGOs to each person or team. Set a time limit, and at the end, the kids can vote on which creation is their favorite. It's amazing to see the lengths kids' imaginations will go to when they're given the freedom to explore. Pop on the LEGO Movie, one of the top movies for kids, afterward as a reward

8. ‘I Spy'

Based on the children's book series of the same name, this nostalgic game is perfect for sleepovers. The kids take turns saying, ‘I Spy…' followed by something they see in the room, and everyone else tries to find the item.

9. Dodgeball

Sleepover games need not be limited to the classics like Hide and Seek and Charades. You can turn your living room into a dodgeball arena by lining the floor with mattresses or pillows (just make sure to move any breakable objects out of the way!).

Sleepover Games For Teens

10. Truth or Dare

Every list of sleepover games for teens should include Truth or Dare questions. Choosing "dare" is often seen as a bolder move, but depending on the question, telling the truth can sometimes be even scarier, especially if it's a deep question. Just pop your head in every once in a while to make sure the kids are keeping things PG.

11. Video Game Night

The best way to get teens on board with sleepover games is to avoid being "uncool" at all costs. This usually means appealing to their interests, which more than likely include video games. From old-school games like Donkey Kong to multiplayer games such as Fortnite, there are lots of teen-friendly options to choose from.

12. Would You Rather

Would You Rather questions are another favorite among sleepover games for teens. The fun part is making the questions as difficult to answer as possible — for example, "Would you rather go blind or lose your sense of taste?" Just like Truth or Dare, this game can easily veer into inappropriate territory, so it's a good idea to keep an eye on things (while trying to avoid the dreaded "helicopter parent" label, of course).

13. Never Have I Ever

Sleepover games have the power to bring friends closer together, and Never Have I Ever questions are some of the best for that. Players state "Never Have I Ever…" followed by something they haven't yet done. This is typically a drinking game in which anyone who has done the stated action must take a shot. To make it age-appropriate, teens can hold up 10 fingers at the start of the game and put one down for each behavior they've done. The person who remains in the game the longest wins.

14. DIY Escape Room

If you're trying to come up with free sleepover games that are still tons of fun, consider an at-home escape room. Write clues in invisible ink and hide objects in sneaky places that will help solve the puzzle. The "final boss" is a combination lock on the door, which the teens will have the correct numbers for if they collect all of the clues. Escape rooms are great team-building activities, so it's a win-win.

15. Photography Scavenger Hunt

Let teens express themselves with a photography scavenger hunt. Create a checklist of prompts, or use our list of Scavenger Hunt clues, for them to find and take photos of. Whoever completes the list first wins. You can specify a theme that fits the kids' interests to make it more engaging.

16. Name the Song

This game involves putting on a playlist of popular songs and seeing who can shout out the title and artist first. It turns into a bit of a frenzy, but that's the fun part.

Sleepover Games For Girls

17. Fashion Show

Roll out the red carpet (or some fabric from the local craft store) so the girls can strut down the runway. They can take turns rating each other's outfits, even giving out awards like "Most Creative" or "Biggest Diva." If you really want to fit the theme of sleepover games, make it a pajama fashion show.

18. Cooking or Baking Contest

A cook-off or bake-off is one of the most unique sleepover games for girls. Whether you set a theme or specify a particular ingredient everyone must use in their dish, this activity encourages teamwork while allowing for a little healthy competition. To raise the stakes, the girls can judge each other's creations at the end of the contest. You can also do an online cooking class or competition, like a sushi showdown or pasta battle.

19. Blindfolded Makeup

Makeovers are classic sleepover activities, but adding a blindfold into the mix turns it into a game — and a challenging one, at that! Girls take turns putting blindfolds on and doing each other's makeup, trying to maintain a steady hand in the process. The girl who does the best job wins (maybe the parents can be the judges).

20. Spin the Nail Polish

Spin the Bottle isn't exactly kid-friendly, but if you replace the bottle with nail polish, you've just created one of the most exciting sleepover games for girls. They take turns spinning the polish, and whoever it lands on has to paint one of their nails. At the end of the game (the girls can decide how long they want to play and set a timer), the person with the fewest number of painted nails is the winner.

21. M.A.S.H.

M.A.S.H. is one of the most nostalgic girls' sleepover games, and although it's gone out of style, it doesn't have to stay that way. Short for "Mansion, Apartment, Shack or House," M.A.S.H. is a storytelling game that predicts your future. Draw a tic-tac-toe grid and assign a different category, such as car, spouse, number of kids and job, to each square. Title the page "M.A.S.H.," then have each girl roll a die. Starting at the "M" in "M.A.S.H.," they'll move around the grid the number of spaces on the die, crossing off options until there's only one left in each category. Each girl can read her "future" like a story.

22. Foot Volleyball

Foot volleyball is similar to hackey sack, except it uses balloons and has a net to separate players into two teams. The game is usually played outdoors, often at night, with glow sticks around the players' ankles. This is also a great idea if you need outdoor family games, if the sleepover is for cousins.

23. Pucker Up

All you need for this game are napkins and tubes of identical lipstick or lip gloss, one for each player. The girls will apply the lipstick, make kissing prints on napkins and place the napkins facedown in a pile. After giving the pile a thorough mix, they'll try to guess whose print is whose.

24. Fashion Designers

Can you make an entire outfit out of tissue paper? That's the challenge girls are tasked with in this game. Pass out scissors and different colors of tissue paper, and give them a certain amount of time to create a masterpiece. The girls can either work in teams or individually. Once the time is up, they can take turns modeling and judging each other's outfits.

25. Movie Night Bingo

Let the girls pick a movie to watch, then create bingo cards they can fill in as they watch. The spaces can say things like, "Someone falls asleep," "Plot twist," and so on. You can also play a game of Icebreaker Bingo to get the night started if there are any new friends joining.

Scary Sleepover Games

26. Flashlight Tag

Flashlight Tag is the nighttime version of hide and seek. It's usually played outdoors, but you could turn all the lights off in the house instead. This is a great option if you're looking for scary sleepover games for younger kids that are just spooky enough without giving them nightmares.

27. Light As a Feather, Stiff As a Board

This spooky game is so popular among tween and teen girls that it inspired a TV show. It involves one person lying down on the floor, with everyone else kneeling around them, placing their fingertips underneath their body, and then beginning to chant, "Light as a feather, stiff as a board" repeatedly. Participants use their hands to slowly lift the person off the ground, making it appear as if they're levitating.

28. Ouija Board

If you're looking for scary sleepover games for older kids who aren't afraid of ghosts, playing with a Ouija Board is a classic slumber party activity because some entity seems to guide the piece around the board. It's pretty frightening for younger folks who don't understand the power of suggestion yet, so keep this one for the older kids.

29. Murder in the Dark

Many sleepover games are twists on Hide and seek, and Murder in the Dark is a spooky version. One person is designated as the "murderer" and another as the "detective," while the remaining players are "civilians." Slips of paper can be used to determine roles. Once you're ready to play, turn off the lights and give the civilians a head start so they can hide.

The murderer moves around the room in the darkness, "killing" the first civilian they find by tapping them on the shoulder. The victim then screams and falls to the floor, and the player who discovers them yells, "Murder in the Dark!" With the lights back on, the detective interrogates everyone to try and figure out who the murderer is. If they guess correctly, the game ends. If not, play continues until the murderer is discovered.

30. Werewolf

Werewolf is one of the most fun scary sleepover games for all ages. Players divide into two teams: werewolves and villagers. You'll also need to choose a moderator. Draw slips of paper to determine roles without revealing them to each other. Everyone closes their eyes, then the moderator instructs the werewolves to open theirs. The wolves silently agree on a villager to "eliminate," then the villagers open their eyes as well and try to guess who the werewolves are. Villagers vote on one player to eliminate. The game continues until either all werewolves are eliminated or the number of werewolves is greater than the number of villagers.

31. Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary is an age-old sleepover game that's really a test of bravery, more so than a ghost hunt. Kids go into a bathroom, turn off the lights and say "Bloody Mary" three times while looking in the mirror. Of course, the infamous ghost is unlikely to appear, but it's still a fun time if they can muster up the courage. If they're old enough, they can watch the horror film Candyman before and see if they can say his name three times too.

Sleepover Games For Adults

32. Karaoke Contest

Sleepover games for adults are probably going to look different than sleepover games for kids, but they can still be just as fun. A karaoke contest is always a good time (especially with a few adult beverages in the mix). Compete to see who has the best rhythm and pitch for a wholesome, memorable night.

33. Card Game Tournament

A card game tournament is perfect if you're looking for camping games because playing cards are portable and easy to use outdoors. From learning the UNO rules to Jenga, the opportunities for nostalgic fun are endless. And of course, you could go more modern with What Do You Meme? or Cards Against Humanity.

34. Trivia

Trivia isn't just for the bar. It's also one of the best sleepover games! No matter what subject or theme you pick, everyone will have a blast and learn some new things in the process. Here are a few trivia questions and answers to get you started.

35. Murder Mystery Dinner

When it comes to party games for adults, it doesn't get much better than a murder mystery dinner. As everyone works together to solve the case, you'll make memories to last a lifetime.

36. Costume Contest

Costume contests are a bit corny, but they're fun sleepover games for friends on a trip together. Whether you create a theme or let everyone come as they please, prepare for a fun night with lots of laughs. Give awards and prizes for various categories as an incentive for guests to put more effort into their costumes. Go trendy with Rhyme Without Reason ideas where everyone comes dressed up in costumes that have no connection other than they rhyme.

37. Board Game Night

If you're on vacation with friends (perhaps renting an Airbnb with the whole crew in one big house together), sleepover games for adults bring everyone together. A board game tournament is a foolproof way to get the group talking, laughing and enjoying each other's company. You can even make DIY board games if you don't want to pack anything extra.

Now that you have all these ideas for sleepover games, you're ready to throw an epic party. From classics like Charades and M.A.S.H. to spooky slumber party games like Murder in the Dark, this list has a bit of everything.

We've even included nostalgic activities for adults, such as a costume contest, that are perfect for a friend group getaway. No matter what games you choose to play, you'll make core memories with your besties.
