What Is Family Feud?

Family Feud is a team guessing game where players try to predict the most popular answers to survey-style questions.

What makes this game so addictive is its simple format: two teams compete to guess the most popular responses to survey questions, with each answer earning points based on how many people out of 100 gave that response. Most questions offer 4-8 possible answers, and the first team to reach 300 points claims victory and inevitable bragging rights.

How to Play Family Feud at Home

Setting up is just as easy as the concept. Just arrange your furniture so teams face each other, designate someone as your charismatic host and make sure teams have equal numbers. This is an especially fun game to play for new partners who are just getting to know how zany your family really is, as there are multiple questions for couples sprinkled throughout.

If you're short a player, simply have someone serve as a host rather than join a team. Here is how to play Family Feud at home:

  1. Split into two teams with equal numbers (or as close as possible).
  2. Choose a host to read questions, judge answers and keep score.
  3. Play one question at a time: Teams guess the most popular answers on the board.
  4. Award points based on the number next to each revealed answer.
  5. First team to 300 points wins (or pick any score limit you like).

Family Feud Rules (Easy House Rules)

  • Three strikes per round: After three wrong guesses, the other team can steal with one guess.
  • No phones: Keep it fair and fast.
  • Answer once per turn: The host can allow a short huddle if you want.
  • Tiebreaker: If you’re tied, do one sudden-death question — first team to get a top answer wins.

Setup Tips (So It Feels Like a Game Show)

  • Put teams facing each other (or side-by-side) with the host in front.
  • Use a whiteboard, notepad or phone notes for scorekeeping (host only).
  • Playing with couples or a new group? Use the "Funny" and "Best" sections first to warm everyone up.
